    THE “STILL LIFE” PROJECT IS A PROJECT IN WHICH ALS PATIENT HIRO INTENTIONALLY PUT HIS CONDITION ON PUBLIC DISPLAY TO BE A SUBJECT FOR A STILL LIFE PAINTING TO POWERFULLY ILLUMINATE THE CRUELTY OF HIS DISEASE. THE VIDEO IS ESPECIALLY MEANINGFUL AS AN ONLINE PROJECT, BECAUSE, FOR ALS PATIENTS THAT HAVE LOST THEIR ABILITY TO MOVE, A COMPUTER OPERATED BY EYE MOVEMENT IS THEIR ONLY MEANS OF REMAINING CONNECTED WITH THE OUTSIDE WORLD. ONLINE IS THE ONLY PLACE WHERE THEY CAN CONTINUE TO ACT AND EXPRESS THEMSELVES LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. A MOVING IMAGE, I.E., VIDEO, IS ALSO AN EFFECTIVE WAY TO ACCENTUATE, THROUGH CONTRAST, THE IMMOBILITY AND STILLNESS THAT ALS FORCES UPON ITS SUFFERERS.

    IN JAPAN, PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES TEND TO HIDE THEMSELVES FROM THE PUBLIC FROM A STRONG SENSE OF SHAME THAT IS DEEPLY EMBEDDED IN JAPANESE CULTURE. TO FURTHER RAISE AWARENESS, HIRO CALLED OUT TO PEOPLE ON SOCIAL MEDIA TO USE HIM AS A SUBJECT FOR A STILL LIFE PAINTING. AS A RESULT, ARTISTS OF ALL LEVELS CAME TO CREATE PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS OF HIRO, WHICH IN TURN SERVED TO EXPAND THE REACH OF THE MESSAGE FURTHER, WHEN THE FINISHED WORKS WERE DISPLAYED AT THE EVENT VENUE'S GALLERY SPACE AS WELL AS IN VARIOUS OUTDOOR LOCATIONS, INCLUDING A SUBWAY STATION AND AN OUTDOOR VISION IN SHINJUKU AND HARAJUKU DISTRICT OF TOKYO (IN DIGITAL FORM).
