  • BACKGROUND OVERVIEW :
THE PHILIPPINES IS THE 3RD LARGEST CONTRIBUTOR OF PLASTIC WASTES IN THE OCEAN IN THE ENTIRE WORLD. WITH THE PHILIPPINES AS CHAIR OF THE 2017 ASEAN SUMMIT, GREENPEACE WANTED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS OPPORTUNE TIME TO CALL ON ASEAN MEMBERS, THROUGH THEIR POLITICAL ADVISORS AND TEAMS, TO TAKE CONCRETE MEASURES AGAINST PLASTIC POLLUTION IN THE OCEANS THROUGH AWARENESS. TO DO THIS, GREENPEACE CREATED A MASSIVE REPRESENTATION OF THE PROBLEM—A DEAD WHALE. ALMOST 160 KILOS OF PLASTIC WASTE WERE USED TO CREATE THE DEAD WHALE’S MASSIVE SIZE OF 73 FEET. THE INSTALLATION IMITATED THE FEATURES OF A REAL DECOMPOSING BLUE WHALE WITH A BLOATED UNDERBELLY. THIS CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF LOCALS, WHO THEN POSTED THE PHOTOS THAT SPREAD ONLINE. BUT UPON CLOSER INSPECTION, YOU WILL SEE THAT THE INSTALLATION IS MADE ENTIRELY OUT OF PLASTIC WASTE. THIS WAS REVEALED TO THE PUBLIC WITH LIVE NEWS REPORT INTERVIEW GIVEN BY A GREENPEACE REPRESENTATIVE ON THE SCENE. PHOTOS WERE POSTED ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND IMMEDIATELY GOT PICKED UP ORGANICALLY BY LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL MEDIA OUTFITS. THEN, IT RESULTED TO THE RECOGNITION OF ASEAN LEADERS IN THE SUMMIT WHICH URGED THEM TO ELEVATE A PROPOSAL FOR THE NEXT ASEAN LEADER’S SUMMIT.
