From its origin of being a pop song, “Gemuruh” by Faizal Tahir has gradually become a national anthem of pride, unity and independence for Malaysians. With its energetic beat and stirring lyrics, the song is a symbol of Malaysia’s collective spirit, particularly during Merdeka festivities. “Gemuruh”, which translates to “Roar”, captures the essence of unity, resilience and the strength of Malaysia’s diverse identity. As people from different ethnic backgrounds join together to sing and celebrate, the song transcends language barriers, offering a collective voice for all. Its upbeat anthem-like quality brings people together, creating a sense of belonging, pride, as well as the spirit of unity in diversity.
