In Japan, it is standard practice for first-year elementary school students to keep a 'morning glory observation diary' to hone their powers of observation and understand the process by which things grow. It is a learning experience shared by virtually all Japanese people, and is a relevant cultural touchstone to which awards exhibition visitors could easily relate. It teaches students the power and cumulative nature of growth, and that they need to pay attention because it can sometimes occur very quickly. It also helps them observe aspects of growth that often go unnoticed, such as growth that occurs at night, the beauty of the different vein structure in each leaf, and the way that vines planted at the same time may grow in completely different ways.
