    Research in 2018 from MIT and Stanford University uncovered
    a disturbing trend: Skin-type bias is prevalent in commercial artificial intelligence systems. This bias is particularly concerning in the era of AI-driven imaging technology, which amplifies
    the problem faster with beauty filters and other imaging tools.

    Existing imaging technologies fail to represent the diversity of global skin tones due to limited and biased datasets. AI learns from what’s available, which are images of flawed, archaic perceptions that fairer skin is more beautiful.

    This systemic flaw perpetuates stereotypes and excludes millions from authentic representation. TECNO saw an opportunity to disrupt this dynamic with Universal Tone, an AI-powered innovation capable of eliminating bias in skin tone representation.

    TECNO believes that technology meant for the world should be made by the world, since every individual may be subconsciously biased about what is beautiful to them. Hence, an imaging product created to enhance all pictures of people in the world cannot be made by a single race or culture.

    We therefore transformed the campaign into a collaborative movement, empowering people from various regions to take the lead and build a more robust data source, enabling AI to amplify what’s right.
