ENGLISH CONTEXT EXPLANATION :
Traditionally, Chinese naming practices reflected societal expectations for women. While men's names often conveyed strength, virtue, or scholarly pursuits, women's names might emphasize beauty, gentleness, domesticity or even have meanings highlighting the inferior role women have in China. Names signifying "delicate flower," "tiny," "quiet" or ‘’second to men’’ were common for girls, compared to names that highlight "leadership," "power," or "achievement" in men's names.
#Inhername started as a direct response to #Ihatemyname conversation on social media inChina, with 56 million views, it shines the light on women who have been victims of sexist naming conventions.
This reflects a societal preference for male heirs, resulting in many Chinese women receiving sexist names. LUX intervened by creating 100 new names with strong, positive meanings. With the support of influencers on Weibo and Red Book, Douyin, they appealed to these women, empowering them to change their names or name their daughters, fostering a more confident and more powerful female generation.
