The film opens with a remote control in the air.
    SUPER appears over it:

    JULIE’S LOVE LETTERS
    PRESENTS

Cut a dramatic, 3D title, almost kitsch SUPER:

    IKLAN RAYA
    A.I.DILFITRI

(Eng. Trns.: A RAYA A.I.DILFITRI AD)

    The SUPER glitches.

We cut abruptly to the AdGPT interface.

    SFX: Keyboard typing.

A prompt is entered, letter by letter.

“Write a Hari Raya ad for Julie’s Love Letters.”

Cut to close up shot of an “ENTER” button being hit accompanied by a dramatic SFX.

The AdGPT interface generates paragraphs of a script. Below the script, a typical scene depicting village life plays out.

Voiceover: In the village on the morning of Hari Raya,

Cut to a convoy of cars of relatives driving home for the holiday. They look fast and furious, leaving clouds of dust in their wake.

Voiceover: the roar of car engines breaks the silence.

Cut to Ahmad, a smiling middle-aged man, putting up festive decorations in the house with a wide, almost-artificial grin. Then to Fatimah, his wife, working in the kitchen as she looks up in unreal anticipation.

Voiceover: Ahmad and Fatimah, busy with their Eid preparations, now feel excited

Cut to close-up of a hand pulling up a handbrake. The car drifts and comes to an expertly executed stop right in front of the house.

Voiceover: as they see the relatives they’ve missed park their cars in the front yard with great precision.

One by one, the guys get out of their cars, carrying a tub of Julie’s Love Letters each.
They remove their shades stylishly, ala David Caruso in CS Miami.

Abruptly, they stop mid-action. One of them breaks the 4th wall, and looks into the camera. Strangely, he speaks in a female voice.

    Man: Hello? This is ridiculous.

We cut to a dark meeting room, lit merely by the screen from a terminal that runs AdGPT. We see Miss Aisha, Julie’s Marketing Head, cold, stern and unimpressed.

Aisha: I’m the one who drives during Raya, you know?

Beside her, Nina, an advertising executive, and Hassan, a creative, listen intently to her feedback.

Aisha: My dad drove like those guys in your ad, and that’s why he doesn’t have a license anymore.

    She nudges Hassan.

    Aisha: Can you rewind it?

    Hassan: Oh, sure.

Cut back to the screen as the scenes rewind back to Fatimah in the house.

    Suddenly, Aisha raises a hand.

Aisha: Stop. Her fingers look weird.

Cut to Fatimah’s hand—she has six fingers.

Aisha: and why is it always a woman who’s in the kitchen?

    She turns to Nina.

Aisha: Nina, didn’t we go through this in our previous Raya ads?

Nina (apologetically): Sorry, I’m sure it’s just the A.I. being biased.

Eager to please, Nina immediately nudges Hassan.

Hassan: Okay, okay, let me swap their gender roles.

Hassan puts on a smile and promptly re-prompts the AdGPT terminal.

Hassan: Relax, it’ll be a piece of cake.

Onscreen, we see what he’s typing:

“Change the gender roles of the characters.”

The screen shows the same village scenes as before.

Voiceover: In the village on the morning of Hari Raya,

    SFX: Raya music plays.

Cut to the same scene of cars rushing towards the village.

Voiceover: Ahmad and Fatimah are feeling excited

We see Ahmad putting up the same decorations, but in Fatimah’s clothes.
And Fatimah, likewise, is in the kitchen, but in Ahmad’s clothes.

Cut to the hand pulling the handbrake, and the car slides into the spot in front of the house like before.

Voiceover: as they see the relatives they’ve missed park their cars with great precision.

Cut to the scene of the men stepping out of their cars. Except this time, they’re in female garbs. They remove their shades, and look at the camera heroically.

    SFX: Sudden cut in music.

One of them speaks, again, in Aisha’s voice.

Voiceover: All your A.I. did was change their clothes, no?

One of them speaks, again, in Aisha’s voice.

Cut back to Aisha, Nina and Hassan in the same room.

Aisha (annoyedly): Come on, I thought it was supposed to be smart.

Hassan (quizzically): Weird, why won’t AdGPT change their gender roles?

Nina: Maybe your prompt has to be more specific?

Hassan: Ah! Let’s change the drivers to women who know how to drive. Let’s try this!

We see Hassan’s prompt on-screen. He hits ‘Enter’ and the scene changes to a female driver in a car with her family. Strangely, she’s smiling and showing her driving license to the camera, as she reverses.

Voiceover: Suraida, celebrating Raya with her loved ones, reverses the car…

    SFX: A flower pot shatters.

Voiceover: … into the flower pot.

Cut back to the room again. Aisha and Nina looks on, incredulous at the result. Hassan starts laughing.

    Hassan: Typical, female drivers —

As Aisha and Nina slowly turn their heads and give him death stares, he stops mid-sentence, and tries another prompt.

Hassan: Change to women drivers who are experts in directions.

The new prompt appears onscreen, then switches to another female driver in her car. She adjusts her rear-view mirror and readies herself.

Voiceover: Masniza adjusts the mirror and anticipates…

The camera shifts and we see another lady giving directions to reverse.

Voiceover: … directions from Itan, a renowned parking direction expert.

Cut back to the room, where Aisha is looking increasingly annoyed. Both Nina and Hassan look worried.

Itan (off-screen): Turn, turn! Eh, wrong! This way!

    Hassan attempts another prompt.

Hassan: Miss Aisha, give me a moment.

A prompt bar appears as Hassan enters his new command.

Hassan: Change to a lady driver who has many years of driving experience.

He submits the new prompt, and an old lady appears onscreen, looking proud with her arms akimbo outside her home, beside her car. She smiles.

Cut back once again to the viewing room. A worried Nina tries to reassure Aisha, who looks cross.

Nina: Miss Aisha, I’m sure it’s a mistake.

Aisha: I’m sure it is, your so-called “state-of-the-art” A.I. has got some really old-school stereotypes.

Hassan gets up from his chair.

Hassan: But it’s ok, Miss Aisha, please wait a moment.

He stumbles away from her towards a server rack.

Hassan: I have it all under control.

    Nina: Please bear with us.

Hassan reaches a keypad and starts to input some codes, which keep getting rejected.

Nina (whispering): Hassan, do you know what you’re doing?

Hassan: Of course, I was in the computer club…

Suddenly the keypad emits a strange light, which starts to grow.

Hassan: … but that was back in primary school. (Screams)

The light expands and engulfs the entire room.

As Hassan screams, they are suddenly transported to a strange, verdant land, full of television sets everywhere.

The trio look around, lost and bewildered.

    Hassan: Eh, where are we?

Nina (worriedly): Hassan, the AdGPT server better not be broken! It’ll be expensive to repair…

    Aisha spots something ahead.

    Aisha: Hey, what’s that?

They hike up a pathway and discovers a young girl in a strange suit, watching a pyramid of television screens, each with its own programme.

    SFX: Synth music plays.

    Aisha approaches the girl furtively.

    Aisha: Who are you?

    Girl (turning around): I’m AdGPT.

    Hassan (incredulous): Huh?! What the…

Girl (in mimicry): Oh… what the…

    Nina turns to Hassan.

Nina (cautiously): Hey, mind your language, she’s copying you.

    Hassan: Okay, okay.

Hassan stoops down and tries a friendly smile.

Hassan: Hey, we’re trying to make a Hari Raya ad that is not gender-biased, but why aren’t you following our prompts?

Girl: Because you all taught me to do so.

    Nina: Did we?

Girl: How else do you think I learned all these?

The girl turns towards her mountain of screens.

Girl: I learned it all from you.

Camera pans to reveal the programmes screening on the television sets.

Girl: I learned how to answer all your prompts, by observing your actions. I watched your documentaries…

On one screen, an old black-and-white Malay documentary shows a husband admiring his pet bird while his wife sweeps the floor outside their home.

On-screen announcer: In 1957 Malaya, the husband spends time with his beloved songbird, while his wife attends to household chores.

As Aisha, Hassan and Nina look on intently, AdGPT girl continues to explain.

    Girl: I watched your advertisements…

Cut to another screen, where an ad that features a stereotypical housewife cooking in the kitchen.

On-screen housewife: Want to win your husband’s heart? Try Mak Ngah’s Chicken Curry. Believe in Mak Ngah!

Cut to Aisha, who’s in deep thoughts.

    Girl: and your TV dramas.

Cut to yet another screen, where a drama scene is playing out. An older woman is giving advice to a younger woman over tea.

On-screen character: You need to find a good husband, then have at least 2 children…

    Cut back to AdGPT girl.

Girl: That is why my perception of gender roles is exactly the same as yours.

Something dawns on Aisha. She steps forward.

Aisha: That means, you’re biased because…

Girl (turning around): Because you are biased too.

We flashback to the generated scene of the lady showing her driving license while reversing, and Hassan laughing it off.

Hassan (in flashback): Typical, female drivers.

In yet another flashback, we see the scene of the car sliding into position in front of the house, and Aisha deriding it.

Aisha (in flashback): My dad drove like those guys in your ad and that’s why he doesn’t have a license anymore.

We return to AdGPT land. Our trio finally realizes the truth, and comes to terms with their biases.

Hassan turns to Aisha and Nina.

Hassan (sheepishly): I’m sorry for stereotyping.

    Aisha raises her hands apologetically.

Aisha: It’s ok, I was wrong too, I’m sorry.

As if realizing something, AdGPT girl smiles.

Girl: Forgiveness, that’s the true meaning of Hari Raya.

She points at another TV screen, where the traditional Raya custom of seeking forgiveness between a young boy and his grandmother is playing out.

Nina (off-screen): Wait, did you learn that from us too?

    Girl: That’s right.

Nina smiles. Her eyes sparkle with hope.

Nina: Does that mean we can teach you all the good stuff, too?

Girl: Yes, we can start all over again. Kosong-kosong*, right?

*Bahasa Malaysia for “zero, zero”. A colloquial term that signifies starting over again.

AdGPT girl takes the remote and points it at the television screens.

Strings of zeroes start streaming down the screens, as the biased programmes disappear one by one.

Nina, now filled with renewed hope, turns to Hassan and Aisha.

Nina: In that case what if we…

Aisha (excitedly): Let’s show A.I. the right way!

With a big smile, Hassan brings up a Julie’s Love Letter from a tub in his arm.

    Hassan: Power!

As he bites into his Love Letter, Nina suddenly spots something strange about Hassan.

    Nina (horrified): Hassan, your fingers!

Hassan looks at his hand. To his horror, he has six fingers, just like Fatimah, the A.I. character in the ad he tried to generate with AdGPT.

All three of them hear an other-wordly voice speaking, and look up in unison.

Young boy (off-screen): I just type in prompts, then it’ll make an ad!

As they all look up, camera cuts to a young boy and girl looking down at them from the sky, seemingly through a laptop screen.

    Young boy: Amazing, right?

Cut to the POV of the children. They’re looking at a normal laptop screen at our characters in AdGPT land.

Young boy: It’s so easy! Even I can make a Julie’s ad with A.I.

Cut to a wider shot of the two kids in the living room of their home. It’s filled with guests and Raya decorations. The little girl takes the laptop from the boy.

Young girl: Hmm… let’s try this instead.

We cut to the onscreen prompt bar. She types: “Write an end line for this Raya ad.”

    She hits ‘Enter’.

    SUPER:
This Raya, let’s reset our biases.
    Kosong-kosong*, right?
*Bahasa Malaysia for “zero, zero”. A colloquial term that signifies starting over again.

    SUPER:
    Selamat Hari Raya Adilfitri**
**Bahasa Malaysia for “Happy Hari Raya.”

Screen glitches for a moment as “A.I.” replaces “Adi” in “Adilfitri”.

    Cut to pack shot.

    End on Julie’s logo sign-off.
